UCC and The North Thompson Community Skills Centre co-exist at 751 Clearwater Village Road. Under this joint partnership both credit and non-credit part-time vocational courses are offered. The Skills Centre region includes the North Thompson communities of McLure, Louis Creek, Barriere, Darfield, Little Fort, Clearwater, Birch Island, Vavenby, Avola and Blue River. The centre is a multi-media learning facility aimed at providing and brokering job related training and retraining for local citizens. It boasts of modern training facilities, proven training resources, top-flight instructors, and state-of-the-art computer and video-conferencing technology.
Some other services offered are: UCC and other post-secondary entrance and assessment exams, application forms for financial assistance, calendars, admission applications, information on distance education courses, GED application and testing. ABE upgrading is offered through a partnership with UCC and School District #73.
A wide variety of courses are offered through the centre, including Basic Literacy, First Aid, Health and Safety, Trades and Technology, Forestry, Computing, and General interest courses. Programs from other institutions, such as the Provincial Instructors Diploma and Mediation Skills, are also available. The coordinator is available to discuss your interests and training needs.
An employment consultant for the BC Works! And BC Benefits program is available to work with individuals to develop job search skills and offer career counselling.
Clearwater Employment Services, Community Futures Development Corporation of Thompson Country –a self-employment, outreach program, -and The Thompson Nicola Referral & Assessment Services also share space in the building.
