Securing your study permit is a crucial step in starting your academic journey at Thompson Rivers University (TRU). To ease the process of applying for a study permit and visa, TRU has partnered with BorderPass to provide all international students access to trusted Canadian immigration lawyers and services at no extra cost.
Apply for your study permit using BorderPass
Working with BorderPass provides a complete, accurate and professional level of support that increases the potential for a successful study permit application. Through BorderPass at TRU, you will gain FREE access to the following services for 12 months:
- Secure online platform for study permit application preparation, review and filing services (BorderPass submits your study permit application to IRCC on your behalf)
- Expert guidance and legal support with access to trusted Canadian immigration lawyers who will guide you through the entire application process, ensuring accuracy and compliance with immigration regulations
- Continuous monitoring of visa status, important dates and immigration documents
- Enjoy additional perks such as ongoing Express Entry score tracking and discounted rates on follow-up visa services
TRU covers all legal and subscription fees for students' study permit application. Students pay a standard admin filing fee of up to $25 and are responsible for covering IRCC fees for study permit application processing and biometrics (if applicable).

What is BorderPass?
Thompson Rivers University has partnered with BorderPass to offer incoming international students access to its premium Canadian immigration services. Whether to study, work, or build a new life, BorderPass is a digital tool that provides new international students with access to trusted immigration lawyers and legal services via an AI-enabled platform with the aim to further support our enrolment services.
Why should I sign up for BorderPass?
You will receive study permit application preparation, review, and filing services through BorderPass by Canadian immigration lawyers, in addition to one year access to the BorderPass platform. BorderPass also provides students with stronger visibility into compliance and the entire immigration journey to help support long-term goals. BorderPass stores all your documents required for your immigration journey in Canada and keeps you on track with notifications of key dates!
How do I sign up for BorderPass?

When is BorderPass available?
BorderPass is available to incoming applicant international students who need assistance with filing for a study permit.
Is there an extra cost to me for BorderPass?
You will receive a free annual BorderPass Subscription for the first year of your program while enrolled in a full-time program at TRU, which includes a study permit application, premium services and access to Canadian immigration lawyers for one year, meaning you only have to pay for government processing and biometrics fees (if applicable).
There are additional optional services that you can subscribe to like a study permit extension application, PGWP application, co-op work permit application, spousal work permit (where applicable), visitor visas, or SIN # registration. For these additional services, a small administrative fee may be applicable to BorderPass and/or Government Processing and Biometrics (where applicable) fees.
Please note that you will receive clear information as to any costs or fees before they are charged to you and you always have the ability to opt out of any BorderPass online services.

Who sees my information when I sign up for BorderPass?
Information provided to and received through BorderPass is accessible only by you and your representatives at BorderPass. They will use your information to help you with your application processes and immigration journey.
Once I've signed up, can I stop using BorderPass at any time?
You can opt out of using BorderPass at any time. Please note that if you choose to stop using BorderPass you will lose full access to the Document Vault & Application Hub, notifications of key dates, your relationship with BorderPass Canadian immigration lawyers, ongoing Express Entry tracking , and other newcomer essential services.
How will I know what I need to do to complete my application process?
BorderPass provides a comprehensive step-by-step guide to help you understand exactly where you're at in your immigration journey or specific permit application process. You will receive email notifications and be able to clearly see all your upcoming key dates through BorderPass' continuous visa monitoring & management and you will see all your immigration documentation in your Document Vault. Can BorderPass guarantee that my application will be approved?
No. However, using BorderPass will provide you with a more complete, accurate, and professional application which is reviewed and submitted by a Canadian lawyer. No one can guarantee that an application can be approved as this is subject to IRCC's discretion.

I'm having issues with my BorderPass account. How do I get help?

BorderPass also has a comprehensive self-service Knowledge Base which includes helpful articles, product walkthroughs, video tutorials, immigration tips, and more.
If I withdraw from TRU, will I still have access to BorderPass?
If you withdraw from TRU, your subscription will remain valid and will lapse at the end of the current study term. After this, you may purchase a subscription to BorderPass for continued access and immigration support, including if you choose to continue using the services to pursue PR.
What are the administrative fees for?
Administrative fees are the cost of paying and administering government filing fees.
If I paid to have my application submitted by a BorderPass lawyer, would they be available for follow-up support until the result of my application is rendered?
Yes! BorderPass lawyers will be available to assist you every step of the way.
Can my dependent family's (spouse/partner, minor children) applications be submitted through BorderPass?
Yes, BorderPass supports dependent family members and applications can be submitted online using the BorderPass platform, subject to a service fee.
Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada has clarified spousal open work permits for partners and spouses of international students in undergraduate and college programs. There are some exceptions for spouses or partners of undergraduate international students in professional degree programs.
Can I receive a copy of my previously submitted Immigration applications via BorderPass if I cease using BorderPass?
Copies of all your documents are hosted in the Document Vault and can be accessed there. The Application Hub provides an overview of all your applications including those previously submitted, in progress, and upcoming.
Will my application be submitted through my own GCkey account through the lawyer's IRCC portal if I choose to proceed with BorderPass services?
All services on BorderPass are submitted through the Lawyers' IRCC portal, and it is highly recommended that you track application or status updates directly through your BorderPass dashboard.
Can TRU staff coordinate as needed with BorderPass lawyers on my case?
BorderPass staff are extremely responsive and will be able to assist every step of your application journey. Providing information about your immigration status and journey is something you can choose to share with TRU as needed. TRU will continue to be available to support you with immigration questions and all questions pertaining to your journey at TRU.
If I transfer institutions, will I still have access to BorderPass resources if the services have previously been paid?
The BorderPass services are available to students when they are enrolled at TRU.
After this, you may then purchase a subscription to BorderPass for continued access and immigration support, including if you choose to continue using the services to pursue Permanent Residency.
What is the turn-around time for an application to be submitted on my behalf through BorderPass after I submit it for the BorderPass lawyer's review?
It takes approximately 15 business days for the BorderPass lawyers to review your information. This gives the lawyers time to ensure you are making the strongest submission possible.
What are you doing to keep my data secure and protect my privacy?
BorderPass takes User data security extremely seriously and has numerous technical and operational measures in place to ensure that customer data remains safe. BorderPass successfully completed the AICPA Service Organization Control (SOC) 2 Type II audit, which confirms that their information security practices, policies, procedures, and operations meet the SOC 2 standards for security.
What happens to my documents and data if I opt in and then later opt out? (Do you destroy the documents? etc.)
User data for legal record keeping purposes are retained until the User requests their destruction, and even then, BorderPass still retains some data for legal record keeping purposes under their Terms of Service. BorderPass retains such records for no less than the period prescribed by Applicable Laws including respective Provincial Law Society's Guidelines on Retention and Destruction.
