Historical fire regime in Xeni Gwet’in Territory (Nemiah Valley)

This project looks to enhance existing research on the impacts of fire exclusion on the historical fire regime in the primary dry-interior Douglas fir forests in Xeni Gwet’in Territory, Nemiah Valley, British Columbia. The study aims to reconstruct fire activity for 300 years to understand the consequences of fire suppression and its potential implications for forest ecosystems. This project will compare regional fire histories to provide a landscape scale understanding of historical fire activity. The project also provides a foundation for future work to integrate perspectives on cultural fire stewardship and inform future fire management strategies in Xeni Gwet'in.
