We host events throughout the year that give us an opportunity to thank and celebrate our donors while raising funds at the same time. Participating in or sponsoring our fundraising events is a great way to provide financial aid for students!
Your donations change lives. Read more about our donors’ impact below.
Thank you to TRU’s department of University and Employment Preparation (UEPrep) for helping students thrive by funding awards for UPrep and ESTR students. In addition to faculty support, students also help build their own awards by participating in trinket sales and donating the tips they receive at ESTR’s Market, an on-campus market featuring local, handmade and sustainable artisan products as well as meals, snacks and sweets that is staffed by ESTR students.
Thank you, Dennis Acreman. In 1995, Dennis gave $10 to the TRU Library Campaign, marking the beginning of a philanthropic journey that has lasted 30 years — so far. During his lengthy career at TRU, Dennis led internal fundraising campaigns, was instrumental in establishing the Math Help Centre, expanded co-op opportunities, developed new course options and so much more. Dennis recently celebrated his retirement and we wish him all the best.
Thank you to members of the Kamloops Thompson Retired Teachers’ Club. Their bursary, made possible through the Kamloops Thompson Retired Teachers’ Endowment, has been providing financial support to students for 30 years. Each year, generous members of the Kamloops Thompson Retired Teachers’ Association make donations to continue building their endowment, which provides two annual bursaries to students enrolled in first year Bachelor of Education at Thompson Rivers University who show commitment and demonstrate financial need. To date, 51 students have received the bursary. Pictured left to right: Bev Maxwell, Pat Petley, Marney Bethell and Glenda Miles, who are all part of the club’s executive team.
Thank you to donors, Jack and Sylvia Gin. Through the Jack and Sylvia Gin Foundation, they are topping up their award for the Private Frederick Lee Scholarship to ensure their endowment continues helping students well into the future. The Private Frederick Lee Scholarship was started in memory of Private Frederick Lee, an honour roll Kamloops student who experienced barriers in pursuing higher education because of his race. He was able to volunteer for service with the Rocky Mountain Rangers and gave his life at the Battle of Hill 70 as a soldier of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. This scholarship honours his memory by awarding a student with a strong GPA, with preference given to a member of Indigenous or racialized communities. Learn more at http://findingfredlee.com
Following the 2023 Memorial Cup hosted in Kamloops, the Canadian Hockey League established the Memorial Cup Legacy Scholarship at TRU. The scholarships are a legacy to support academic excellence and community service in Memorial Cup host cities. Thank you to the Canadian Hockey League for establishing the Memorial Cup Legacy Scholarship at TRU.
Thank you to the donor of the month, TRU School of Nursing (SON). In February, they picked a wellness-related theme called “Straight from The Heart.” One of the activities for the month was to send candygrams with fun messages to classmates and colleagues. This was done by donation with proceeds going to the Owyn McInnis Memorial Fund. Hundreds of candygrams were sent and the SON raised a total of $743.90, which was matched by the TRU Foundation, for a total donation of $1487.80. Members of the SON Wellness Committee presented the proceeds to TRU WolfPack volleyball players Madison Maichin (second year BSN student) and Matthew Hamilton.
