Mission Fulfilment

TRU is committed to continually assessing and tracking its progress towards mission fulfilment and student success. TRU’s mission fulfilment planning and evaluation process is supported by four standing committees of Senate who are responsible for reporting on institutional effectiveness based on established performance indicators and measures of success, and guided by TRU’s mission statement.

Education Quality Assurance

TRU maintains a high standard of quality assurance and holds an Education Quality Assurance (EQA) designation through the BC Ministry of Post Secondary Education and Future Skills. Standards for maintaining this trademark are outlined on AEST’s website under Education Quality Assurance. TRU must meet or exceed these qualifications, set out by the Ministry.

Designation is assessed on an annual basis. The University must demonstrate that it is in compliance with all applicable federal, provincial, and muncipal statutes, regulations, and bylaws. Further, TRU must be in good standing with any relevant quality assurance or regulatory body for which the University offers educational programs.

In addition to other requirements as stated in the Education Quality Assurance: Policy and Procedures Manual (March 2018), TRU must operate in accordance with the academic governance framework set out in the Thompson Rivers University Act and University Act, and participate in periodic Quality Assurance Process Audits.

Quality Assurance Process Audit (QAPA)

QAPA is an external review process to ensure that public post-secondary institutions periodically conduct rigorous, ongoing program and institutional quality assessment.  All BC public post-secondary institutions participate in the QAPA once every eight (8) years.

The provincial program first launched in 2016 and TRU participated in its first QAPA in January 2020. The review included a self-study, external peer review and recommendations, response to recommendations, and a progress report. TRU's self-evaluation report and external peer review recommendations are now available in the QAPA Summary.

Programmatic Accreditation

TRU is committed to rigorous program assessment through various external program-level or specialized accreditation bodies. External program accreditation can take at least two forms: 1) the program may be accredited or, 2) the graduates of a program may apply for standing with a professional accreditation body.
