Co-op Photo and Video Contest Summer 2024

Capture your Co-op work term and share your experience!

Take a photo of a cool moment, favourite project or special place in your work environment and write a caption that describes the subject matter and reflects on your experience or film a video (scripted or unscripted) that captures an interesting moment, process, or place from your co-op work term.

Additionally, participation in this contest can be considered as a student’s final project for the Co-op Summer 2024 Work Term.

Submission Deadline: Sunday, August 18, 2024, 11:59 p.m.
Winners and runners-up announcement: Friday, August 30, 2024

Contest Rules

  • Participants must be over the age of 18.
  • Participants must be a co-op student in a summer 2024 work term.
  • Participants may submit up to three (3) photos/videos but can only win one (1) prize.
  • Participants must own the rights to the photo(s)/video(s) submitted OR have permission from the person who took the photo(s)/video(s).
  • Participants must have their employer’s permission to submit photo(s)/video(s) that depict the workplace or work product.
  • Participants and all persons depicted in the photo(s)/video(s) must fill out and submit the Consent to Release Personal Information to a Third Party form.
  • Winners and runners-up must consent to have their name published by TRU in promotion of the contest and subsequent CEL marketing.
  • By participating in this contest, entrants grant TRU a non-exclusive, royalty-free, sub-licensable, worldwide, transferable, perpetual licence to:
    1. Use, copy, adapt, communicate, distribute, publicly display, and create compilations and derivative works or merchandise from any photo submitted as an entry to this contest (including any caption submitted with the photo[s]); and
    2. Use entrant’s name and/or any statements made by entrant in connection with their entry.
  • TRU reserves the right to amend these rules or to terminate the contest at any time without any liability to any contestant or third party. Any amendments to these contest rules and regulations will be posted on the contest website.

Photo and Caption Content Guidelines

  • Photo(s) must be submitted in .jpeg or .png file format.
  • Photo(s) must be original and taken by or of the participant during their Summer 2024 Work Term.
  • Photo content must be related to the co-op work term.
  • Photo(s) can be cropped or colour corrected but cannot be photoshopped or otherwise seriously altered AND all changes must be the work of the participant.
  • Photo(s) cannot contain text or watermarks
  • Photo(s) cannot depict the following:
    • Children or minors
    • Advertisements or commercial messages
    • Illegal or inappropriate activity
    • Offensive language or symbols
    • Nudity or sexual behaviour
    • Any other content that TRU determines in its sole discretion to be objectionable and/or inappropriate.

Photo submissions must be accompanied by a 200–300-word caption using the following prompts:

  1. Your name, academic program, year of study, number of co-op work terms
  2. Employer and job title
  3. Describe what is happening in the photo
  4. Indicate why the photo is important and why you chose it.
  5. Highlight your learning/growth:
    • Soft skills
    • Technical skills
    • Strengths
    • Any new knowledge
    • Any unique experiences

Judging

All photo and video submissions will be evaluated by a panel of judges consisting of students, staff, and faculty. [Co-op Coordinators are not eligible for adjudication to avoid conflict of interest.]

Submissions will be graded from 1 (Poor) to 5 (Exceptional) in each of the following categories (respective to the media type submitted):

Evaluation Rubric

  • Adherence to contest rules and content guidelines.
  • Representation of Work Term (photo relates to your work term).
  • Technical quality of photo (photo is high-resolution and well-lit).
  • Composition (subject(s) is/are in focus and framed well with strong placement and angle).
  • Creativity (use of colour, originality, creativity, humour is welcome but not required).
  • Caption (relates the photo content to the work term and demonstrates personal/professional reflection).

Video Content Guidelines

  • Video(s) must be submitted in .mp4 format.
  • Video(s) length must be under 1 minute.
  • Videos can be scripted or unscripted.
  • Video(s) must be original and filmed by or of the participant during their Summer 2024 Work Term.
  • Video content must be related to the co-op work term.
  • If it is edited, all video editing must be the work of the participant.
  • Video(s) can contain subtitles, text, special effects or graphics.
  • Audio must be original OR under a creative commons license (no copyrighted songs or background melodies).
  • Video(s) cannot contain watermarks.
  • Video(s) cannot depict the following:
    • Children or minors
    • Advertisements or commercial messages
    • Illegal or inappropriate activity
    • Offensive language or symbols
    • Nudity or sexual behaviour
    • Any other content that TRU determines in its sole discretion to be objectionable and/or inappropriate.
