JOUR 2061: Introduction to Multimedia

In this hands-on course, students design and produce a semester-long multi-media storytelling project, connecting journalistic storytelling techniques with multi-media and social media tools used by professionals to reach diverse audiences. Creating stories in audio, video and visual media, students engage in critical approaches to multi-media analysis and design, leveraging the unique features of individual media to reach storytelling goals. Students enhance skills in applied written communication, shaping their craft for different digital contexts and audiences, including social media, blogs and websites.

Learning outcomes

  • Implement basic principles of journalistic storytelling.
  • Assess and apply the communicative potential of different media to achieve storytelling goals for particular audiences and contexts.
  • Plan, produce and publish (for a peer audience) a multi-media story project using a variety of visual, audio, video and text-based media.
  • Explain and apply principles of multimedia analysis and design.
  • Demonstrate use of a variety of media production and editing equipment and software.
  • Enhance skills in applied written communication with emphasis on writing for web, script development, and storyboarding.

Assessments

To successfully complete this course, you must achieve a passing grade of 50% or higher on the overall course.

Assignment 1: Set Up a Website and Write About Me 15%
Assignment 2: Write an Informative Story 25%
Assignment 3: Plan, Capture, and Edit Photos / Plan, Gather, and Edit Audio 35%
Assignment 4: Storyboard, Capture, and Edit Video 25%
Total 100%
