PLAR: Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition

Credit for career and life learning

We can help you earn TRU credits based on the knowledge, skills and abilities you have acquired outside of post-secondary education. We use a process called PLAR — Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition.

Examples of what you could use

The skills and knowledge gained from these areas — and others — could be demonstrated and assessed for credit.

  • Volunteer and paid work
  • Industry-based training and certifications
  • Professional development and designations
  • Continuing studies courses
  • Private study
  • Workshops and seminars
  • Employment
  • One-the-job training
  • Traditional ways of knowing
  • Community work
  • Non-accredited institutions
  • Military Service

Four PLAR pathways that can lead to credit for life learning

Create a Competency-Based Portfolio

Demonstrate your broader learning background for credits toward your electives.

Create a Course-Based Portfolio

Demonstrate your knowledge and skills specific to a TRU course via a portfolio and gain credit for that course.

Take a Challenge Exam

Demonstrate your knowledge and skills specific to a TRU course via exam and gain credit for that course.

Use the Credit Bank

You may already have pre-assessed training.
