World Languages and Cultures Certificate

In a global environment, broad-based formal instruction in language and culture is of the utmost importance. Employers in all fields recognize that to be competitive and successful, their companies and employees must demonstrate increased knowledge, sensitivity and appreciation of other cultures.

The certificate in world languages and cultures meets this need as it educates successful graduates to better serve an increasing market of global and intercultural travelers and to communicate more effectively with contacts worldwide. The goal of the program is to provide students with a solid academic base in world languages and cultures through a combination of language and culture courses and field schools/study abroad.

Admission requirements

• BC Grade 12 or Adult Dogwood or Mature student status.
• English 12/English 12 First Peoples with a minimum of 73 percent within the last five years: OR Level 4, on the composition section of the Language Proficiency Index (within the last two years); OR completion of English 0600; OR completion of ESAL 0570 and ESAL 0580 with a grade of C+ or better.

Certificate requirements

• Twelve credits of language instruction in two different languages at the 1XXX level.
• Six credits of languages instruction at the 2XXX level.
• Three credits in cultural theory at the second- or third-year level from List A: Cultural Theory Courses.
• Three or more credits of an ML-approved, cultural/ language-oriented field school or credits earned through study abroad.
• Twelve credits of electives in at least 3 different disciplines from List B: Electives.
