General Plan and Excursions
MLAN 2700, Modern Languages Field Course in Treuchtlingen, Germany, May 2015.
We settle into the Adventure Campus on Sunday 3 May.
Monday to Thursday the day goes like this:
- Breakfast 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.
- Class 9: a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
- Lunch from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
- Excursion 2 p.m. to 5:30-ish.
- When eating during on outing, dinner on-campus 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Friday is field trip day.
Saturdays and Sundays are free days, with lots of optional weekend activities. We will help you organize activities, but you are independent on weekends, as you are your costs. Meals will continue to be served on-campus on weekends, but you must sign up for them on Fridays.
During the first and third weeks, other courses will also be in session at the Adventure Campus. There will be many opportunities for the integration of Canadian and German students—this is an excellent opportunity for all involved. This integration need not be limited to extra-curricular activities, but where appropriate and with Dr. Pitts’ permission, can also include MLAN students being participants or “guest students” in other morning classes, such as Sport Management or Arts and Culture Management. This will improve your German listening skills and increase your immersion in German culture.
Dr. Diane Pitts is the instructor for MLAN 2700. Dr. Joel Schmidt and Dr. Michael Riedl, both of the UAM Faculty of Key Competencies, and Dr. Manuel Sand of the UAM Faculty of Sport Management, will be pleased to be in and out for guest lectures and to accompany students on their excursions, as their schedules allow.
Except where noted, excursion costs are figured into student cost for the field school (the exact number of which we will know after the 31 January application deadline, although you know it’s about $1,950).
Excursions (all in German language, subject to change)
Monday, May 4: Explore town and castle on hill by foot, meet Mayor, perhaps city welcome banquet.
Tuesday, May 5: Bicycling from campus around area, along river, etc. Campus bikes.
Wednesday, May 6: Town historical tour, guided.
Thursday, May 7: Adventure Campus activities: slacklining, archery, climbing mechanism, indoor climbing wall.
Friday, May 8: Quad tour, half-day. Breakfast and dinner on-campus.
Monday, May 11: Raft building, river rafting, raft deconstruction and bus-loading.
Tuesday, May 12: Food shopping in Treuchtlingen, preparing our own bbq on campus, German food.
Wednesday, May 13: Bike to historic Osterdorf on campus bikes; guided tour.
Thursday, May 14: Treuchtlingen Therme, take the mineral waters etc at spa.
Friday, May 15: Nuremberg visit. Students assume cost of shopping/meal. Breakfast on campus.
Monday, May 18: Treuchtlingen museum tour, focus on Romans, including cooking a Roman-ingredient meal together.
Tuesday, May 19: Climbing (Berg kletteren) at Adventure Campus spot or rappelling.
Wednewday, May 20: Altmuhltal Nature Park; hike at Twelve Disciples; Sohofen Museum.
Thursday, May 21: Wettelstein Biergarten in Treuchtlingen—German biergarten culture. Dinner there. Students assume cost.
Friday, May 22: Stand-up paddleboarding, high rope garden, bbq, bus back. Breakfast on campus.
We do not need to plan evenings for the students; the Adventure Campus evenings are very lively and social on the main floor of the building and the patio. Most enjoyable for you—I heard lots of conversation, guitars, singing, laughter. There is also a big TV. Fun and a great way for TRU students to mix with German students.
