TRU Science

Fast Track Diploma Requirements

If you have gained a Bachelor of Science degree and would like accelerated access by directly entering the second year of the RT Diploma, the fast-track option may be for you.

Fast-track admission requirements are ranked and selected for acceptance according to the following:

  • The number of successfully completed science courses.
  • The correlation between your first-year diploma courses and your undergraduate degree courses (anatomy and physiology, statistics, physics, English, etc.).

The number of fast-track seats is limited.

The number of fast-track seats depends on:

  1. The number of successful students from first year who choose the diploma stream.
  2. The number of students in the third-year dual credential stream.

These two cohorts make up the pre-clinical year and that number can't exceed 120 students.

If you are not accepted into the fast-track option, your application will be assessed and you may be offered a seat in year one of the RT program, providing you meet the minimum education requirements.

Fast-track transcripts are assessed for year one transfer credits. Please be aware that post-secondary courses supersede high school courses.

As a fast-track applicant, you will be notified of your admission decision in early March.

If accepted, you should receive a conditional acceptance into the fast-track option, subject to the successful completion of the distance courses listed below.

RESP 1761 Pulmonary Physiology and Introduction to Ventilation
RESP 1781 Respiratory Therapy Equipment
HLTH 2511 Introduction to Pharmacology
Moodle course RT Medical Terminology

Complete Medical Terminology first followed by HLTH 2511 or RESP 1781. You should complete RESP 1761 last. Lab work associated with RESP 1761 will take place during the first week of classes.

All of these courses must be completed by the time you enter the RT program’s fall semester. You may be able to complete one final exam during September when Open Learning offers final exams.

Successful completion of the courses requires a minimum of 50% on the final exam and a minimum of 60% in each course.

The distance courses are delivered through Open Learning. Visit the Open Learning website. For more information and to register for the distance courses listed above.

Be sure to look at the Open Learning exam dates to determine when you can write your final exam each month. Students enrolled in the above online courses must register for final exams at least one month prior to writing.

Note: The courses listed above are for fast-track students only or for students who have been given approval by the RT department. If students are declined a seat in fast-track and accept a seat in first year, they will need to register in the face-to-face RESP courses. Registering for these courses and successfully completing them prior to being accepted into the fast-track option, does not guarantee you a seat in the program.
